Do you ever wonder why you just can't shake the past?

Disturbing events can result in the feeling of ongoing danger. You may get anxious, proceed with caution, and even isolate from those around you. While the logical part of your brain might say, "The event has passed, you're OK now," the emotional part can refuse to believe it. This is because trauma memories are processed differently than normal memories. Since the brain stores trauma in a way that disrupts healthy healing, you might struggle to feel at ease.

What if trauma didn't have to hold you back from living your life?

It is possible to work through your past without going back to it. Trauma has a strange way of showing up in the present. Because trauma impacts our nervous system, you might notice a shift in physical symptoms. It is common to feel tense, a lack of grounding, or a disconnect from yourself. As your therapist, I can guide you in self-regulation and reestablishing your sense of safety.

EMDR Therapy

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.

Many people dread processing trauma due to the fear of having to retell their story. Fortunately, EMDR allows you to target traumatic events without reliving them. EMDR therapy relies on the understanding that trauma is incorrectly stored and uses a technique known as bilateral stimulation. Bilateral stimulation, also known as BLS, can include eye movements, tapping, or buzzer devices. Rather than discussing all of the painful details of your trauma, EMDR focuses on specific moments in time. While reprocessing, the goal is to repair the mis-storage of trauma and help your memories feel less disturbing.

As a trauma-informed therapist, I recognize how difficult your journey might feel. It is important that my clients feel heard and have the space to process trauma-related thoughts, sensations, and emotions. My goal is to facilitate an environment that is warm, encouraging, and free of judgment.
